About the Department
English Language Teaching, one of the oldest Departments of the University offered its first PG (Post Graduate in English Language Teaching) and Certificate (Certificate in English for Communication) courses in 2003. The Department also introduced a Post Graduate Diploma Course from 2005. The PG programs were implemented with the objective of Teacher Training and Teacher Development of teachers of English Language at tertiary and secondary levels. With an aim of empowering the learners with teaching competence and knowledge from the discipline, Center for Language Studies was formed to initiate the programs and the courses.
In the first decade, the Department was under the School of Humanities and Social Sciences and was later on transferred to the School of Humanities in 2015. The Department runs a Short Term Program CICE (Certificate in Communicative English) with the Center for Language Translation and Cultural Studies from 2018. The Diploma Program from 2021, ADELT (Advance Diploma in English Language Teaching) is a teacher development course which is interdisciplinary and equips learners with holistic learning. Since 2022, the PGELT course has a Choice Based Credit System, and a restructured syllabus. The learning materials for the new syllabus were developed and edited by renowned ELT teachers and practitioners across the country. ELT courses have specific demands and follows feedback strategies from the University to the learner as well as learner-University interfaces.
