About the Department

The Department of English at NetajiSubhas Open University was formally notified in 2019 as an entity under the School of Humanities. The Department is dedicated to advancing the study of language, literature, and cultural expression through the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode. With a vision to nurture critical thinking and literary appreciation, the department offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes that blend classical and contemporary approaches to English studies, factoring in the expanding horizons of the discipline. In addition, the department offers a PhD programme in English in the regular mode and in keeping with relevant regulatory norms. The program fosters advanced research in literature, language, and cultural studies, and encouraging original contributions to national, regional and global discourses.

Our faculty members are actively engaged in research and academic exchanges, ensuring that learners benefit from both scholarly depth and practical exposure. The department emphasizes interactive learning through Personal Contact Programmes (PCPs) in both offline and online modes, counselor workshops, various outreach programmes involving the wider academic community, and sustained learner‑centric initiatives.

In line with the mission of the School of Humanities, the department seeks to build a community of learners and scholars who contribute to pan‑Indian literary discourse while connecting with global knowledge.
